About Us

The Red Apple Reading program is not only a labor of love to its creators, but the unified effort of a team of US educational experts to make effective reading instruction available outside of the classroom. The mission of Red Apple Reading is to enhance the lives of children around the world by providing a fun and effective alternative to the traditional methods of teaching reading to children.
Tammy Bennecke founded this program after teaching for thirteen years in California public schools. She realized that when it came to reading skills, too many children were “slipping through the cracks.” Tammy knew that she couldn’t sit idly by while so many kids were being short-changed. So she assembled a team of top experts and began crafting the perfect solution. She wanted something that would be easily accessible, based on top teaching techniques, and fun for the children who used it.
The result: Red Apple Reading! The entire program is designed for children ages 3-9 who are reading below a 3rd grade reading level, the essential years for learning how to read. Park Planet focuses primarily on Kindergarten and 1st grade reading skills, ages 5-7. Island Adventures has 1st thru 3rd grade foundational reading skills and is recommended for ages 6-9. They are both based on Common Core State Standards and can be accessed from any computer with Internet access. Carnival Fun will complete the program and is designed for preschoolers. It teaches critical pre-reading skills and is expected to release late 2014.
Besides Tammy’s guiding hand, our team also includes experienced classroom teachers, reading intervention teachers, a school psychologist, speech pathologist, skilled animators, highly trained web developers, and parents of school-age children. The outcome is a highly effective program based on the work of professionals who have spent decades in U.S. schools.

My Review:
My son is 5 and he has really struggled with reading.  We have tried ABC Mouse and reading Eggs over the past year.  They have the right idea, but the one thing they both have I don’t like is the arcade.  The games on there are not educational and I always find my son playing them rather than doing the lessons.
Recently Red Apple Reading offered me the chance to there program in exchange for my opinion.  I was so excited as well was my son.  As you as we logged in I could tell this was different from the others we have tried. First off the parent account is great, it lets you track your child’s learning and see what they are doing great at and what needs more work.  As soon as my son logged in we were greeted with a sweet easy to understand voice that takes you through all of the activities.  I love that you are tested after each level to see if you can move on.  Other programs I have tried didn’t offer that and my son would try to work ahead and get frustrated. The games are cute and super fun!  He asks all of the time to play on it. As for the reward system, as you go through the lessons you earn “apples” and they can be used to play a game.  The best part is there is no open arcade, as you work through the lessons you will get the opportunity to play a game and use the apples.
My son has really blossomed in his reading.  He is working so hard at sounding out sight words.  Best program we have used by far!
